If, like me, you’re juggling domestic or family responsibilities alongside running your own business, you may be in the process of trying to get back into the swing of working life after a few weeks in a lower gear over the summer. Or maybe you just took a well-earned holiday. Either way, it can be hard to get re-motivated.
Even my kids had a touch of the ‘post-holiday blues’ and were not looking forward to going back to school after a summer of freedom. But I was struck this year by three things.
- Firstly, how clever school was – their first week back was in fact just 2 or 3 days, so it was a gentle start.
- Secondly, how much FUN was built into those first few days.
- And finally, how quickly they got back into the routine and seem to be enjoying it.
I think there is something we can learn here. When you are trying to resume after a break, go easy on yourself, perhaps work an hour or so less than usual and do some exercise or outdoor activity – make the most of the longer daylight hours while they last!
Try and complete some tasks you like doing rather than diving straight into a really challenging project. You can get a great sense of achievement by ticking a few things off the list, perhaps some nagging tasks that have been hanging around for a while.
My final tip relates to remembering why you do what you do. I think my kids got back into their routine quickly because they realised, hey I actually like seeing my friends, having a bit of independence and LEARNING stuff! So, if you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed by your to-do list or struggling to get motivated remember what got you going in the first place – was it the thrill of being your own boss, the satisfaction of doing a good job or having the ability to choose your working hours.
Tap into that and you’ll be flying in no time!
